SCENE: Alone and feeling completely forsaken by Frances at the end of the American continent, the witness finally despairs of avenging Frances Coles’ murder after confronting William Green with a pistol in a bar on the Barbary Coast. After his long quest, he cannot bring himself to shoot the man, knowing in his heart that Green cannot truly be the murderer. The witness deeply desires to unite with Frances and believes he must cross the deep divide of death to be with the one he loves.
He resolves to complete the task that he has been given. At the moment he accepts his fate, Frances comes to him. With the spirit as his guide, he crosses over the great divide to meet his otherworldly mistress in death.
